GAME CHANGER? PLANNING FOR JUST AND SUSTAINABLE URBAN REGIONS
36th Association of European Schools of Planning Annual (AESOP) Congress
Paris, 8-12 July 2024
The congress’s main theme, “GAME CHANGER? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions”, questions the global narrative of large events and internationalisation strategies, even more so when the ecological transition is at stake. Scholars have critically assessed the impacts of international events like the Olympic Games and major infrastructural works. In 2024, Paris hosts the Games and a new metro system, a global city home to both the greatest economic strengths and social inequalities. The limits of economic growth and the metropolitan model are not new, and the expectations for radical changes are increasing.
Hence the question: what is a real game-changer? The answer becomes crucial in the context of a post-carbon, sober approach to urban development.
